New Dental Choice is also an attractive option to the 70% California employers that do not offer dental benefits to their employees. New Dental Choice was known as The Dental Club prior to its licensing.

First Dental Health founder Dr. Michael Grossman is a board-certified periodontist, entrepreneur, and an early pioneer of dental PPO networks in California. In 1985, he recognized that dental care, being primarily elective, required different solutions for patients than traditional medical managed care plans. Working with San Diego-area dentists who agreed to reduce their fees in exchange for the potential of more patients, he co-founded Community Dental Network, one of the nation's first dental PPOs, and Dimensional Dental Services, a dental review company. In 1995, Dr. Grossman founded First Dental Health with venture capital backing.

Approximately one-third of all California dentists are contracted with First Dental Health. The network now includes more than 8,000 dentists who practice in approximately 14,000 locations across the state. These dentists - who undergo credentialing and annual re-credentialing reviews (as compared to the bi-annual industry standard) -- reduce their customary fees by one-third to one-half on a fixed fee schedule for more than 300 dental procedures for patients participating in First Dental Health and/or New Dental Choice plans.
